#Do1NiceThing – Love Your Streets

#Do1NiceThing – Love Your Streets, one of five strands of the work of Street Angels – CNI Network, launched the 2012 campaign on Valentines Day, encouraging people to do one nice thing every day.

Inspired by a Channel 4 programme on the London Underground where staff shared their experiences of life working on the Tube. One of the comments was around the fact very few people ever interacted with Underground staff in a positive way but how, when members of the public did, it made the work seem better. How sad that we live in a culture where we are too busy rushing off to catch the next train or in too much of a rush to get to the next shop or too busy in our own world with mobiles and iPads that we forget to interact with other people!
#Do1NiceThing is encouraging just that – smiling at someone, saying thankyou, letting a vehicle out of a side street, taking 30 seconds to enter into a conversation with the underground staff or shop assistant, offering time to volunteer or call in on an elderly neighbour – the little acts of kindness can make a big difference.
As we move into Lent can Love Your Streets challenge you to give up a small amount of your time every day to make life nicer for others? Tweet about it – #Do1NiceThing and inspire others to get involved in spreading love and niceness!
Matthew 5: 43-48 challenges us to this –  “You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty. If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that.  In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.”
