Being an early adopter I’ve become very addicted recently to new social network Pinterest. Pinterest is a site where you can create virtual pinboards on any topic you like. One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most is pinning inspirational quotations and bible verses. This humorous pin demonstrates this addiction:

I’ve got two ‘boards’ on Pinterest where I post either inspirational quotations or bible verses.
In today’s Big Read passage from Mark, Jesus is approached by a scribe in the Temple and asked ‘what is the greatest commandment?’ I have spent quite a lot of my time pinning these inspirational quotations and bible verses on Pinterest but if I’m honest, I’m not sure how thoughtful and reflective I am when I do it. I read them and think ‘I like that sentiment’ and then ‘repin’ it to one of my boards quickly. In today’s reading, Jesus is effectively asked, ‘if you could pin the most important command to a Pinterest board about faith, what would it be?’ He responds by quoting Deuteronomy 6:4,5 and Leviticus 19:18:
These are the greatest of all the commandments of God. As I read today, I thought – have I read that in the same way I would read an inspirational pin on Pinterest – here today and forgotten tomorrow – or have I thought deeply about what it means?
In the Anglican communion service, these verses are often read just before we make our confession. Why do you think that is?
If you reflect deeply on it, you can see why Jesus said to the scribe (who clearly did do that):
“You are not far from the kingdom of God.” v34
