Deborah gives a Nudge (@CraigPhilbrick)

Did you know there are now more people on earth who have access to a mobile phone than have access to a toothbrush?

In the UK two fifths of adults now own a smartphone, according to Ofcom’s latest Communications Market Report. We take them with us everywhere – we even answer them in the bathroom or whilst sitting on the toilet – and we leave them on at night allowing them to disturb our beauty sleep. Welcome to the digital decade.

Whilst offline political activism is falling, the three main political parties now have significantly more Twitter followers than they do formal party members. And as devices can do more, cost less and give greater mobile internet access; we are seeing new opportunities for political activism through online engagement.

nudge-screenIt is for this very reason that Tearfund have developed our latest innovation: Nudge.

Nudge is a mobile app that lets you have your say on issues that we care about as Christians – stuff like climate change; unearthing the truth on corruption; or telling David Cameron to take the rare opportunity of hosting the G8 to tackle the forgotten scandal of hunger.

In the Book of Judges we meet a counselor, warrior, and wife called Deborah. As the only female judge mentioned in the Bible, Deborah is portrayed as a strong independent woman and leads a successful counterattack against the forces of Jabin, King of Canaan.

As the story unfolds we see how Deborah had to keep nudging her military commander, Barak, to remember what God had promised – that He had a plan and had gone ahead of them. The story ends with victory, and peace reigns in the land for 40 years.

Deborah’s story reminds me of how God is transforming the world – through us, His people – not abandoning it. God created order out of disorder, cosmos out of chaos. And when people look at the church they should get a sneak preview of the new heaven that is to come.

By harnessing the power of smartphones, social and digital media, we have a unique opportunity to inspire a generation of Christians into political activism. Nudge is just one way you can lend your voice to the cry and make our world a fairer place.

Like Deborah, we are each called to be compassionate, loyal in our love, and to speak up for those who have no voices. Download Nudge today. http://nudge.tearfund.org
