When there is no breeze,
leaves rest as if they’d
never move.
Smoke rises thin and
vertical, a pencil plume in the sky.

When there is no breeze,
mist smothers the valley,
clouds hang heavy,
humidity swells.

When there is no breeze,
birdsong travels,
footfall thuds,
a scratching squirrel is
an excitement.

When the breeze comes,
faces turn up,
eyebrows quicken,
heartbeat moves from
bass to snare.

When the breeze comes,
mist disperses,
clouds move,
humidity departs.

When the breeze comes,
water ripples,
hair ruffles,
cheeks tingle.

When the breeze comes;
we rise to life.
