Perhaps the issue is that people have advertised their giving up facebook in a way that seems to undermine the whole thing?

I can see the concern not to denigrate online relationships, that's fair. I would imagine the folk who are giving up would be doing so because they didn't see it in their own use of social media, which doesn't mean that they're saying all social media use is less valuable. But even then, if I go on a silent retreat and don't see people for two weeks, I'm not undervaluing my friendships by so doing.

Thanks for using your precious 15 minutes to comment here ;-) Very much valued & appreciated. I have just had a weekend essentially without social media as I was in Berlin, and it's interesting to see how little of it I do "personally" as much of it is classified as work! I am ALWAYS keen to see that the phone (or whatever) is our slave rather than our master.... so a more disciplined use of it - and thinking about what it gives us - seems more appropriate than cutting it off!
Potentially, I can see that... but for many, there are strong relationships online, and if we cut down, then are we saying those relationships are less valuable? It's a common perception that they are value-less, and I think that's what I'm reacting against. I think it may also be similar to somewhere that I used to work that banned alcohol in case it caused issues for recovering alcoholics, but had cake everywhere... different temptations for different people.
Well I am giving up Facebook for Lent and I have done so for the past two years [I also give it up during the season of Advent]. I also try to limit my PC time to 15 mins per day for essential things like emails, banking etc. [oh and commenting here ;o)] For me it's about moving closer to Christ, living with and working through my reasons for repentance and therefore every time my thoughts turn towards the PC I instantly redirect them towards the true focus of this season. This is not to say that I'm not doing positive things as well as I do take up something new each year.

The internet is not a huge part of my life even when I'm not fasting from it but I do feel it is all too easy to say 'just have more self control, be more disciplined' but in reality it's never quite that simple. A new habit can be created from doing something different for more than three weeks apparently, so maybe this could be the first step towards being more disciplined with our usage of social media?? I don't think there is anything to be lost by fasting from social media and who knows, you may find something positive and wonderful in that huge window of time that appears in it's stead.

Presumably though, people who give up chocolate or other food aren't saying that food is bad? They're just cutting back to make them more aware of what they have. If so, then could not giving up social media be a way of becoming more aware of ourselves in the same kind of way?
